What’s in your ham?

I’m one of those weird people who likes to buy meat products that contain as much meat as possible, and I actually pay extra to get products made out of meat, instead of products made out of potato flour and excessive amounts of water. Packaged ham is a pretty notorious field for this, and in Iceland, we can even buy “Pizza ham” which is only 50% meat. I use packaged ham regularly for sandwhiches, and had found the best ham in my mind. 88% meat, no potato meal. It’s called “Honey ham” and the labels have said, “new!” on them for at least two years now. I was by chance looking at the packages in the store yesterday, and noticed that there were two different versions of the honey ham I normally buy. They have the same barcode, so they’re the “same”, but they are most definitely not the same. The new version cuts the meat from 88% down to 80%, and adds potato meal to the mix! They’ve also added milk suger and glucose syrup, and the binders and preservatives have changed, but I can’t comment much on those. Both of these were available for sale in the Bónus on Laugavegur.

I intensely dislike this sort of behaviour, and sent some pictures to the local media. Now, I’ve also got to go and reread all the packaging on all the hams for sale again and try and find some meat made out of meat.
